New Year – New Discoveries 2019 – as we get ready to issue in a new year it is time to reflect on 2018. I have written forty-seven posts on my WordPress site not counting this one. At the beginning of 2018, I had thought about looking for a part-time job just to keep the mind fresh and alert along with interacting with the public. After several attempts in looking for a job, I discovered that I had now fallen into the “black hole” of overqualified for some jobs and too old for others. So early on in the year, I decided that I would seek another profession and return to what I have loved since 1983 – family genealogy.

My addiction to family genealogy has been a long one and even when it seems to dry up on leads or I hit that brick wall there is always something pulling at me to continue. Genealogy never really ends as our families get bigger and bigger so does the number of family members to keep track of daily. There is always that one person who seems to be able to find that picture or story about a relative, in my family it is me.

A few years back I had a family blog that I enjoyed working on but while I was traveling in the southwest for three winters it was hard to concentrate. I was also trying to continue my research on the road and that was difficult as well. So I set it aside and enjoyed the traveling. The time came for me to return home and settled back into midwestern life again and I was ready to do it.

No matter where I was at my passion for family genealogy always tugged at my heart. I discovered once again the need to write about my ancestors. The pictures were there in my closet ready for me to take them out and tell their stories, especially while I still have a mind that can retain the information that my mother, Nancy Gertrude Brumley Weik shared with me over the years. I knew what I had to do and I did it – I started my blog again.

For my birthday present to self in 2017, I decided to take another big step in my quest to learn more about my family – AncestryDNA. I took the test and got the results back and new discoveries started to appear. It was a thrill for me to connect to others I might never have known if it weren’t for the AncestryDNA test.

This year I was able to help other family members with their research which is always special to me. I guess the super highlight of 2018 was helping my step-grandson discover that he is related to one of the first Pilgrims who arrived at Plymouth Rock. It is still a long road to obtaining all the facts but at least it was a great beginning.

There will be new discoveries in 2019 and I will be looking forward to what this year will bring with my blog and with the continued research of my family genealogy. I would like to thank all my readers who follow me and I look forward to reading other blogs and their successes.
