Henry Clayton Skirvin and Rebecca Looney

Henry Clayton Skirvin and Rebecca Looney are my fourth great-grandparents. Henry was born July 30, 1787, in Fayette County, Kentucky. Rebecca was born in 1790, in Tennessee. They were married in 1808, in Gallatin County, Kentucky.

The Census of 1810 shows that Henry and Rebecca were living in Woodford, Kentucky, and only had one child. In 1820, 1830, and 1840, they remained in Gallatin, Kentucky. In the Census of 1850, we get more information on the family. Henry was now listed as a physician and a farmer with real estate worth $2500.00.

Henry Clayton Skirvin started his duty to his country by joining the 13th Kentucky Infantry Regiment military during the War of 1812 to 1815. This war was fought by the United States and its indigenous allies against the United Kingdom and British North America. Henry was a private in Dudley’s 13th Regiment Kentucky Militia. Henry also served as a Confederate soldier as a Private for his beloved Kentucky. He was enlisted into Company A, 7th Battalion Mounted Infantry. They assembled in September 1861. He was an older man when the Civil War broke out, so it is unknown if he served or helped in another way.

Henry Clayton Skirvin died on October 17, 1868, in Glencoe, Gallatin, Kentucky he was eighty-one years old. It is not known where he is buried currently. Rebecca Looney died also died in 1868 in Gallatin County, Kentucky. It is not known whether they died on the same day, just the same year.

Henry and Rebecca Skirvin’s children –

Mary Nancy Skirvin (my third great-grandmother) was born on July 11, 1809, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. She married Reuben Abraham Nichols (my third great-grandfather 1805-1888) on April 19, 1827, in Gallatin Kentucky. They had a large family, Simon (my second great-grandfather 1827-1884), James Harvey (1829-1857), Mary Jane (1831-1871), John Clayton “Jackson” (1834-1906), William Henry (1836-1907), George Thomas (1839-1889), Francis Marion (1841-1894), Rebecca Margaret (1841-1894), Louisa Susan (1846-1870), Nancy Ann (1849-1940), and Sarah Elizabeth Nichols (1851-1924). Mary Nancy died on December 10, 1888, and Reuben Abraham Nichols died on December 7, 1888, and both are buried in the Nichols Family Graveyard in Clark County, Missouri.

Robert L Skirvin was born in 1811 in Gallatin County, Kentucky. He married Julia Ann Castleman (1809 in Ohio) on May 22, 1833, in Gallatin County. Robert was a Confederate prisoner during the Civil War. To this union eight children were born, John C (1834-1805), Frances Jane (1835-1852), Alfred (1838-1912), Ann (1843-1916), Robert (1844-1885), Henry Clayton (1846-1900), Jemima (1854-?), and Edwin Cooper Skirvin (1856-1914). Robert died April 18, 1883, in Gallatin County, Kentucky, and Julia Ann died June 25, 1855, in Laketown, Wabash, Indiana.

Joel Skirvin was born in 1813 in Dry Ridge, Grant, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Glasscock on November 16, 1842, in Grant County. I was only able to find one child born to this union, Louisa Skirvin (1846-1916). Joel Skirvin died on June 20, 1864; it is not known where he died. He is buried on the Max Workman farm. It is unknown whether Elizabeth Glasscock Skirvin remarried after Joel’s death or her death date and place.

Louisa A Skirvin was born February 29, 1816, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. She married John W Rowe in about 1834 in Kentucky. Seven children were born to this family, Delcina Elizabeth (1936-?), William J (1838-?), Alfred C (1840-?), Henry Clay (1841-1921), Louisa Jane (1844-1932), Mary Francis (1847-?) and Joanne Katherine Rowe (1855-?). Louisa A Skirvin Rowe died May 12, 1901, and John W Rowe died November 25, 1903, both in Gorin, Scotland, Missouri.

Alfred L Skirvin, Sr. was born on September 4, 1818, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Castleman on January 21, 1847, in Gallatin County. This couple had four children, Mary J (1856-?), Alfred L Skirvin, Jr. (1860-?), William Carl (1870-1929), and Susan G Skirvin (1872-1928). After Elizabeth Castleman’s death, he remarried Mary A Dacey (1854-?) in 1875 and they had two children, Edward C (1876-?) and William C Skirvin (1878-1945).

Rebecca Jane Skirvin was born in Gallatin County, Kentucky in 1818. She married John Lewis Castleman (1820-1876) on January 23, 1840, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. This family had nine children: Augustus “Gussie” 1842-1921, Stephen 1843-1903, Mary Elizabeth 1844-1892, Clayton “Bud” 1846-1917, Nancy Jane 1848-1917, James W 1849-1872, John William 1850-1898, David Ellis 1859-1933, and Martha Jane Castleman 1859-1861. Rebecca Jane died May 2, 1906, in LaRue County, Kentucky. John Lewis died on November 6, 1876, in LaRue County and is buried in Hodgenville.

Alfred L Skirvin, Sr. was born on November 4, 1818, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Castleman (1830-1887) on January 21, 1847, in Gallatin County. This union had four children: Mary Iva 1856-?, Alfred L 1860-?, William Carl 1870-1929, and Susan G Skirvin 1872-1928. Alfred married for a second time to Mary Anne Dacy (1858-1922) and they had at least two children, Elwin Casper (1876-1947) and Edward L Skirvin 1896-?. Alfred L Skirvin died on February 24, 1899, in Glencoe, Gallatin, Kentucky. Elizabeth Castleman Skirvin died on April 14, 1887, in Owen, Kentucky. Mary Anne Dacey died on November 21, 1922, in Danville, Pittsylvania, Virginia.

Dr. Henry Clayton Skirvin was born on June 4, 1825, in Napoleon, Gallatin, Kentucky. He married Paulina Thompson on January 1, 1854, in Lewis County, Missouri. Henry and Paulina had two children, Ira Henry (1855-1938) and Marion Lee Skirvin (1862-1940).

Dr. Henry Clay Skirvin’s Obituary

Mary W Skirvin was born on February 22, 1829, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. Mary married Dr. John Stackhouse (1806-1887) on February 17, 1849, in Gallatin County. At the time of this writing, I have found no children born to this marriage. Mary W died on August 4, 1899, in Gallatin, and Dr. John Stackhouse died on February 6, 1887, in Owen Kentucky.

William C Skirvin was born on February 28, 1835, in Gallatin County, Kentucky. He married Clarissa Wilson (1832-1917) on June 21, 1858, in Owenton, Owen, Kentucky. This couple had four sons, Calvin (1860-1922), Edwin (1862-1941), John (1863-1934), and Richard Skirvin (1866-1954). William died on February 27, 1914, in Owen County, and Clarissa died on January 7, 1917, also in Owen County.
