The Life and Legacy of Anna Susan Pultz: A Family Journey

Anna Susan Pulse is my great grandaunt, and she was born on January 20, 1861, in Burlington, Iowa. Her parents are John Wilson Pulse (1836-1860) and Jemima Susan Lozier (1840-1928). She had one brother George Edward Pultz (my great-grandfather 1859-1929). Her father John Wilson Pulse died on November 24, 1860, in Trenton, Henry County, Iowa. He was twenty-four years old. Her mother became a widow at twenty years of age.

During this same time period Samuel Newton Marquis (1833-1916) was married to Rachel Jan Lozier (1833-1863) my 2nd great grandaunt on September 14, 1858, in Clarke County, Iowa. Rachel and Samuel started their family, Sedora Ellen (1862-1940) and John W Marquis (1863-1863). Rachel died on March 3, 1863, in Clarke Country, Iowa. Rachel and Jemima were sisters. Rachel was only twenty-nine years old when she died. Samuel and Jemima were both now without partners and each of them had children they needed help raising. Sometime 1867 in Clarke County, Iowa Samuel and Jemima were married and combined their families.

Jemima Susan Lozier died on January 31, 1928, in Clarke County, Missouri. She was eighty-seven years old and buried with her husband.

Anna Susan Pultz married William Andrew Calvin (1853-1933) on September 26, 1878, in Iowa. Anna and William had three children, Walter Andrew (1879-1933), Zuninglas (Zee) Clark (1879-1947), and Frankie Calvin (1885-1964). It is not known if Walter was married, I have found no records. William married Dorothy McCullough on February 20, 1907, in Franklin County, Kansas and they had no children. He died December 30, 1934, in Manhattan, Riley, Kansas at the age of eighty-one years old. William Andrew Calvin died December 30, 1934, in Manhattan, Riley, Kansas and is buried in the Sunset Cemetery.

Anna outlived her family, but over the years she was well taken care of by her nieces and nephews. Her brother Edward had a very large family of thirteen children. Anna died February 21, 1963, and was one hundred and two years old and is buried with her husband in the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, Riley, Kansas.

I remember meeting Anna when I was thirteen years old. My father Merle Otto Weik drove us from Illinois to Kansas to celebrate this big occasion with her. Long before I thought about family genealogy as my favorite hobby. She was the oldest person I had seen at that time in my life, and I thought how awesome it was that she had lived this long. I can imagine the stories she would have been able to talk about and her life. She still remembered my dad and as always, they joked with one another about something because he made her smile.

Anna lived quite a life and in her one hundred and two years she collected many friendships and the love of all who knew her.
