Joseph (Pulse) Pultz from Virginia to Iowa 1807-1873

Iowa Cornfield

Joseph (Pulse) Pultz is my third great-grandfather, and he was born on May 15, 1807, in Berkeley County, Virginia. His parents are John Pultz and Margaret Phoebe Grantham. Joseph married Eleanor Ann Wilson Cole (1817-1880) on November 3, 1832, in Berkeley County. They were the parents of ten children.

I started to follow Joseph and Eleanor through the Census records. I watched how their journey unfolded from Virginia to Iowa.

The 1840 Census finds the family in Berkeley County as farmers raising their family. The 1850 Census shows that they are now in Miami, Greene, Ohio, and Joseph’s father is now living with the family and is ninety-two years old. Joseph is still working the land as a farmer.

In 1856 Joseph and his family were living in Lockridge, Jefferson, Iowa. The 1860 Census has them living in Hale, Warren, Illinois, and Joseph was still farming. The 1870 Census shows that they had traveled and settled in Washington, Warren, Iowa. In 1872 we find Joseph and his family living in White Oak, Warren, Iowa. He had forty acres on which he farmed.

Knowing that he was near death on February 10, 1873, he drew up his last will and testament.

On February 22, 1873, Joseph Pulse died he was sixty-five years old. He was laid to rest in the IOOF (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) Cemetery in Indianola, Warren, Iowa.

Eleanor was now a widow and the 1880 Census shows she remained in Warren County along with her two sons, Joseph C and William Pultz. Eleanor died on September 18, 1880, in Spring Hill, Warren, Iowa. She is buried in the same cemetery with her husband. She was sixty-three years old.

They had the same struggles that all families had during that time but overall lived a prosperous life surrounded by a large family.
