Simon Lozier and Susan Sarah Berge Neel are my third great-grandparents.  Simon was born September 20, 1807, in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. They were married about 1826 in or around Perry County, Ohio. They started their family in Ohio by having a daughter Eliza Ann Lozier in 1827. Five more children would be born in Ohio, George W 1830, Jonas James 1831, Mary M 1836, and Joel Lozier 1838.

In the 1840 Census, the family moved to Henry County, Iowa Territory. Simon and Sarah completed their family by having Jemima Susan 1840 (my 2nd great-grandmother), John W 1843, Franklin D 1844, and Simon Nicolas (Vick) 1849. Simon acquired land to farm on December 1, 1841, in Henry County, Iowa.

Simon Lozier and Susan Sarah Berge Neel in the 1850 Iowa Census lived in Trenton, Henry, Iowa with all of their children. The 1860 Census has them still living with their family in Trenton and he is listed as a farmer with $5000 in real estate and $3000 in personal estate. In 1880 the couple lived in Fisher, Fremont, Iowa with their son Joel.

On November 15, 1899, in Page County, Iowa Simon filed his Last Will & Testament. Simon died almost a year later on October 9, 1890, in Liberty, Clarke, Iowa. He was eighty-three years old and is buried at the Bethel Chapel Cemetery, in Liberty.

Simon Lozier died, on October 9, 1890, of old age, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. S. N. Marquis, near Jay, Clarke, Iowa. He was eighty-three years, and nineteen days old. The deceased was born in Pennsylvania in 1807 and was left motherless when he was only six weeks old. He moved to Ohio when a youth and served an apprenticeship at the hatter’s trade. He was married to Susan Neel on June 16, 1824. He immigrated to Henry County, Iowa in 1839 where he endured many hardships in his early career. He was a farmer and improved a farm of one hundred and eighty acres near Mt. Pleasant.

Simon then visited his two sons in California, and after his return purchased a farm in Page County, Iowa. This he sold in 1882 and purchased the property in Shenandoah where he made his home. He raised a family of nine children, five of whom have gone on to reap their reward in a better world. He and his sainted wife joined the Missionary Baptist Church in 1873 when he accepted Christ and found him a precious Savior. He has enjoyed many blessed seasons in his life service waiting for the coming of his Lord and Savior. In his last moments, he told his loving companion that he was going to rest. The funeral services took place at Bethel Chapel where he was laid to rest in the churchyard. The services were conducted by Reverend J. A. Morris.

Susan Sarah Berge Neel died on January 23, 1897, in Liberty, Clarke, Iowa, she was eighty-six years old.

Obituary from the Weekly Osceola Sentinel, Osceola, Clarke, Iowa on January 28, 1897. Susan Neel was born in the year of our Lord, September 13, 1810. She was born and raised in Perry County, Ohio, and married Simon Lozier in 1820. They immigrated to Henry County, Iowa in 1839. To them were born eleven children, six sons, and five daughters. They moved to Page County, Iowa in 1871, and lived there until 1890, then came to Clarke County, to visit their daughter, Mrs. A. J. Marquis, and Mrs. S. N. Marquis.

After Simon’s death in 1890, Susan then made her home with her daughter until her death on January 23, 1897, aged eighty-six years, four months, and ten days. She leaves five children, three sons and two daughters, and many friends to mourn her death. Susan was converted in early life and united with the Baptist denomination. She lived as a true and devoted Christian and died in the triumph of a living faith. Her life was full of good deeds. Many hearts have made glad through her ministrations of love. She is buried with her husband in the Bethel Chapel Cemetery.

Children of Simon and Susan Lozier:

Eliza Ann Lozier – was born December 1, 1827, in Ohio and died at the age of eighteen years old on May 13, 1846, in Iowa. She was never married.

George W Lozier – was born in 1830 in Ohio and died July 26, 1873, in Sacramento County, California. He married Margaret Ann Kinkaid on September 30, 1869, in Ray County, Missouri. Two known children are Louisa Jane 1871-1941 and William Lee Lozier 1876-1928. Margaret married again to Frederick A Miller about 1876. Margaret died on June 17, 1936, in Washington County, Kansas.

Jonas James Lozier – was born November 3, 1831, in Lake Perry, Ohio. It is not known whether he was married but at this writing, I have not found a spouse or children. Jonas died October 28, 1891, in Yuba County, California, at the age of fifty-nine years old.

Rachel Jane Lozier – was born November 2, 1833, in Muskingum County, Ohio. She married Samuel Newton Marquis on September 14, 1858, in Henry County, Iowa. They had one child Jemima Susan Marquis 1859-1914. Rachel died at the age of twenty-nine years old on March 3, 1863, in Clarke County, Iowa. She is buried at Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Liberty, Missouri.

Mary M Lozier – was born on January 4, 1836, in Ohio. Mary married Andrew Jackson Marquis on April 6, 1854, in Henry County, Iowa. Mary and Andrew had eight children: George H 1857-1859, Simon B 1859-1860, Iowa Ann 1860-1923, Elizabeth E 1862-1863, Clemont V 1864-1925, Henrietta (Etta) 1867-1948, John F 1868-1942, and Benjamin Martin Lozier 1876-1910. Mary died at the age of fifty-four on December 24, 1890, in Liberty, Clarke, Iowa. Andrew remarried after her death to Lucy Burton Pace on June 7, 1894, in Lucas, Iowa. Andrew died on August 13, 1901, in Clarke County, Iowa.

Joel J Lozier – was born May 2, 1838, in Lake Perry, Ohio. He married Caroline Hite on September 22, 1866, in Sandusky County, Ohio. There is no other information I have been able to find on this couple. I have found no children born to this union. Caroline Hite Lozier went on to marry a second time to Noah Preston Baigtel in 1874. Joel died on October 28, 1891, in Yuba County, California.

Jemima Susan Lozier – (my great-great-grandmother) was born on September 20, 1840, in Henry County, Iowa. She married John Wilson Pulse (my great-great-grandfather) on June 24, 1858, in Henry County, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: George Edward Pultz (my great grandfather) 1859-1929 and Anna Susan Pultz 1861-1963. John Wilson Pulse died November 24, 1860, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa. He was only twenty-four years old.

Jemima Susan Lozier married for the second time in 1867, to Samuel Newton Marquis he was a widower and the husband to her late sister Rachel Jane Lozier. Jemima and Samuel had seven children: Sedora Ellen 1861-1940, John W 1863-1863, Mary Josephine 1867-1954, Calvin C 1868-1940, James Albert 1870-1945, Simon Newton 1875-1876, and Clarke Marquis 1879-1897. Samuel died on December 3, 1916, and Jemima died on January 31, 1928, both in Clarke County, Iowa. They are buried in the Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Liberty, Iowa.

Private John W Lozier – born in 1843 in Iowa. He was never married and had no children. John W Lozier age 19 of Mt Pleasant, Iowa nativity Iowa enlisted on March 18, 1862, into Company F 17th Iowa infantry and he was promoted to Corporal. He was wounded severely on May 16, 1863, on Champion Hill, Mississippi, and died of disease. He is buried in the Shiloh National Cemetery, Shiloh, Hardin County, Tennessee.

Franklin D Lozier – was born October 13, 1844, in Iowa and died July 30, 1865, in Iowa. He was just twenty years old. He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa. He enlisted in the Civil War on July 12, 1861, at the rank of Private in Company K, Iowa 6th Infantry Regiment. He was never married and had no children. He is buried on July 30, 1865, in Iowa. He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa.

Simon Nicolas (Vick) Lozier – was born June 16, 1849, in Henry County, Iowa. He married Amanda Jane Olinger in 1867. They had four children: Alice Olivene 1869-1947, Eliza Ellen 1874-1953, Martha Susan 1879-1969, and John Lee Lozier 1881-1955. Simon also served in the Civil War in 1865. Simon died in 1883, in River, Cleveland, North Carolina it is not known where he is buried. Amanda died April 15, 1926, in Meno, Major, Oklahoma. She is buried in the Concord Cemetery in Meno.
