
Eleanor Ann Wilson is my third great-grandmother, and she was born on August 1, 1817, in Virginia. Eleanor’s parents are William Wilson 1762-1837 and Sarah B “Sallie” Hardcastle 1846-1864. Her siblings are Sarah 1780-1836, Hannah 1790-1827, and Robert Hardcastle Wilson 1818-1876.
Eleanor married Joseph Pultz on November 3, 1832, in Berkeley, Virginia. The 1840 Census shows that they were living in Pittsylvania, Virginia. By the 1850 Census, they had moved to Miami, Greene, Ohio. The 1856 Census shows they were residing in Lockridge, Jefferson, Iowa. In 1865, it shows that they were living in Monmouth, Warren, Illinois as per the Tax Assessment of that year.

In 1870 they were living in Washington, Warren, Iowa and chose to call that home. By the time, Joseph and Eleanor’s family had grown into a large one. Their children include John Wilson (my second great grandfather), Elizabeth Ann, and Maria Elen. Lewis Alexander, Joseph Cornelius, and Margaret Virginia are also their children. Additionally, they had Moses G, Samuel Smith, William Edward, and George Iowa Pulse.

In 1872 Joseph Pulse bought land in White Oak, Warren, Iowa. It wasn’t but a year later that Joseph died on February 10, 1873, in Indianola, Warren, Iowa. He was sixty-five years old and was buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola.

Eleanor Ann Wilson Pultz died seven years later on September 18, 1880. She is buried alongside her husband in the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola, Warren, Iowa.
There ten children are as follows.
John Wilson Pultz (my second great-grandfather) born April 12, 1836, in Virginia. He married Jemima Susan Lozier 1848-1928 on June 24, 1858, in Henry County, Iowa. They had two children George Edward (my great-grandfather) 1859-1928, and Anna Susan Pultz (1861-1963). John died on November 24, 1860, and is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, Henry, Iowa. Jemima married for the second time to Samuel Newton Marquis 1833-1916. Jemima died on January 31, 1928, and is buried in the Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Liberty, Clarke, Iowa.


Elizabeth Ann Pultz (1837-1925) was born on August 8, 1837, in Berkley County, Virginia. She married Henry M Black (1833-1910) on December 22, 1863, in Warren, Illinois. They had one daughter Bertha Ann Black (1875-1958). This family spent their entire life in Warren County, Iowa. Henry died on August 22, 1910, in Washington, Warren, Iowa. Bertha never remarried and she died on September 18, 1925. Henry and Elizabeth are buried in the IOOF Cemetery Indianola, Warren, Iowa.
Maria Elen Pulse was born on October 27, 1839, in Berkley County, Virginia. She died at the age of nine years old on November 25, 1848.
Lewis Alexander Pulse was born on September 13, 1841, in Berkley County, Virginia. At the age of twenty-three years old he entered the Civil War. He was in H Company, 47th Illinois Infantry Regiment Consolidated. He never married and died at the age of twenty-six years old on February 8, 1868, in Columbia, Monroe, Illinois. He is buried at the Monmouth Cemetery in Monmouth, Warren, Illinois.
Joseph Cornelius Pultz was born on May 8, 1843, in Berkley County, Virginia. He married Florence H Studley on September 8, 1880, in Warren County, Iowa. Joseph and Florence had three children, Edith E (1881-1937), Elsie Minerva (1884-1947), and Leslie Donald Pultz (1894-1970. Joseph died in February 1919 in Hayden, Routt, Colorado. Florence never remarried and died on March 4, 1936, in Colorado.
Margaret Virginia Pulse was born on December 28, 1844, in Berkley County, Virginia. She died at an early age of fifteen in Hale, Warren, Illinois and was never married.
Moses Grantham Pultz was born on June 23, 1847, in Berkley City, Virginia. I have not found much information on him or a death date. I did find out when he and his brothers were old enough to enlist in the Civil War. This information is in the Iowa U.S. Records of Persons obligated to Military Duty, 1862-1910.
Samuel Smith Pultz was born on September 3, 1850, in Miami, Greene, Ohio. He married Elizabeth Jane “Jennie” Easter on December 24, 1874, in Indianola, Warren, Iowa. To this union, eight children were born. The children were Alva Lester 1876-1944, Claude Leroy 1879-1931, and Maude Arlie 1882-1975. The other children were Rexford Cecil 1886-1955, Ralph Clifton 1888-1964, Truman Dell 1891-1930, Elizabeth 1893-1985, and Ethel Waneta Pultz 1893-1974. Samuel died in a motorcycle accident on November 24, 1923. Jennie never remarried and died on March 21, 1931. They are both buried Laurel Cemetery in Polk County, Iowa.

William Edward Pultz was born on August 6, 1853, in Ohio. He married Phebe Jan Gregg on August 17, 1882, in Ottawa, Clarke, Iowa. William and Phebe had two girls, Daisy Olive 1883-1900 and Mabel E Pultz 1891-1917. William died in 1910 in Osceola, Clarke. Iowa. Phebe never remarried and died on January 19, 1952, and is also buried in Osceola, Clarke, Iowa.
George Iowa Pulse was born on July 11, 1859, in Hale, Warren, Illinois. He was a young man at only twenty years old at his death on September 16, 1879. He is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Indianola, Warren, Iowa.
Eleanor and Joseph Pultz had ten children and four of them died an early death. They chased the American dream over Virginia, Ohio, Illinois and Iowa, where they finally settled.
